Winnie (Herring) Howell

Winnie Herring Howell, 96, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2022. She was born October 7, 1926 in Duplin County the middle girl of 9 children born to the late Thomas D. Herring and Mazie Brice Herring. She graduated from Magnolia High School and attended East Carolina University. She was a resident for over 42 years on Keiths Road in Knightdale. Winnie retired from Wake County Public School Systems where she served as a teacher’s assistant in the special needs classes, but spent most of her time as a library assistant, retiring with 25 years of service. As long as her health permitted, she was an active member of Knightdale Baptist Church. 

A service to celebrate her life will be held 2:00 pm, Sunday, December 4, 2022 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale. Burial will follow at New Knightdale Baptist Church Cemetery on Mailman Road. 

The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the funeral home. 

Leaving behind to cherish her memory, her son, Mark E. Howell (Cecille); daughter, Karen Dillinger (John); grandchildren: Katie Ellis (Tim), Megan Tuttle (Hunter) and Lauren Knight (Alex), Claire and Camille Howell; great-grandchildren: Holden Ellis, Hannah Ellis and Fletcher Tuttle; sister-in-laws: Sally Herring, Cherry Howell; and a host of very special nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, Winnie was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Howell; siblings: Marie Carter, Hazel Powell, Irene Lewis, Kitty Wingo, Tappy Murray, Eunice Reddington, George Herring, Thomas A. Herring. 

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks for the wonderful care given to their mother by the Coventry House of Zebulon and Community Home Health Care (Hospice).
