William “Bill” Thomas Poteat, 84, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021 at his home in Raleigh. He was born August 15, 1937 in Swannanoa, NC to the late Albert Carl Poteat and Dahlia Elizabeth Poteat. He graduated in 1962 from NCSU with a BS degree in electrical engineering. After graduating, he worked for ITT and CP&L. Bill was married to Dixie Glover Poteat for 56 years until her passing in 2015. Bill loved sports and was a natural athlete. He played on his church softball team into his 60’s. William was a devoted husband and father. He was a faithful servant of God and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church for 48 years. Over these years at Mount Vernon he served in many capacities, he was the Chairman of Deacons, church treasurer, a trustee, Sunday School Director and served on numerous committees. He was the last surviving member of the personnel committee that recommended to the church that Shannon Scott be hired as Pastor.
The funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Monday, November 15, 2021 at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 7600 Falls of Neuse Road, Raleigh, NC 27615. A viewing will be held from 10:30 to 11:00 am. Due to COVID there will be no family visitation. Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery, 11610 Durant Road, Raleigh, NC 27614. Everyone is invited to the graveside.
Surviving: son, David Michael Poteat (Kim) of Raleigh; daughter, Donna Lynn Poteat of Raleigh; grandchildren: Ashley Casadonte (Tim), Doug Poteat (Stacey), Will Poteat; great-grandchild, Hadley Casadonte; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Dixie Glover Poteat and brother, Colonel James Donald Poteat.
