Wade Lee O’Neal, 94, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2021 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born August 19, 1927 in Johnston County at the old O’Neal homeplace. His parents were the late Wade Hampton O’Neal and Lucy Ellen Hocutt O’Neal. He farmed with his family until he was called to service for his country at the age of 18 years old. He served in Tachikawa, Japan with the 5th Air Force during WWII as a military policeman. After coming home he met and married the late Alice Jeanne Brantley. They settled in Raleigh where he was employed with the The Standard Supply Co., Inc. (Jones Supply Co.) for forty-six years. In 1961 their son Mitchell Wade O’Neal was born. At that time Jeanne resigned from her job at Occidental Life Insurance. After her death, he lived part time with his son in Raleigh, but most of the time he lived at their Kure Beach home. When Mitch married his wife, Kelly in July of 2020 he lived full time with them in Wilmington. He loved living there, gardening, fishing and meeting new friends.
A service to celebrate his life will be 2:00 pm, Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park with Military Honors, 2911 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh.
The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the funeral home.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his son, Mitchell “Mitch” Wade O’Neal and daughter-in-law, Kelly; step-granddaughter, Kaitlyn and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Jeanne; he was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters.
