Roderick “Jack” Dane Barden (86) of Raleigh, North Carolina, was called home to Heaven on Wednesday, April 19, 2023. He passed away peacefully after a long illness.
Jack was born on December 8, 1936, in Wake County to the late George Harold Barden, Sr. and Elsie Upchurch Barden. He spent his childhood playing with his brothers at the river, fishing, hunting, and farming. After meeting the love of his life, Shirley, and growing his family, he joined the Raleigh Fire Department.
After his retirement, Jack could often be found at Wil-Mar golf course. A longtime member, he loved playing golf, working at the course, and socializing with his many friends. Every now and again, you’d see him enlisting the help of one of his grandchildren, Jesse or Krystie, to ride shotgun around the course and collect as many forgotten golf balls as they could find, before going over to the driving range to practice their swings. He was proudly remembered for his participation in the Red Stell Memorial Tourney where he hit a hole-in-one two years in a row at his late friend’s favorite hole. If he wasn’t at the course, you could find him in his favorite recliner watching westerns, Nascar, or listening to bluegrass. Most mornings he’d be enjoying a meal at the local Knightdale Bojangles, where he was known by some staff as “Papa”.
He joins his beloved wife, Shirley Ann Lamm Barden; his brothers, Albert Charles Barden and George Harold Barden, Jr.; his parents, as well as many other friends and family members who preceded him in death. He will be remembered by his brother; Joe Barden; daughter, Carole Webb; son, David Barden; as well as his grandchildren, Jesse Barden and Krystie Webb.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date, please contact the family for more information.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the North Carolina Firefighters Fund.
