Richard Thomas Powell

Richard Thomas Powell, 83, passed into Glory on Good Friday, March 29, 2024.  He was born on September 18, 1940, in Pasquotank County to the late George Washington Powell and Nettie Sawyer Powell. Richard graduated from Central High School in Elizabeth City in 1958 and earned degrees from Chowan College and Atlantic Christian College. He retired from the NC Department of Insurance as an Insurance Underwriter/Analyst. Richard was passionate about his Lord, his family and friends, flying, and his dogs.

Richard is survived by his daughter Caryn Hommel and her husband, Greg; his grandchildren of whom he was so proud: Nathan Hommel and his fiancé, Danielle Sawyer, Kristin Hommel, Caleb Hommel, Gracie Hommel, and Emma Jo Powell; his beloved great-grandchildren: Amelia Mae Hommel and Eliora Wray Hommel; his sisters-in-law: Gayla King and her husband, CD, Judy Thacker and her husband, Bill; as well as many special nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra Thomas Powell; his daughter, Tonya Faye Powell; his grandson, Matthew Powell Hommel; and his sister, Josephine Lynn Powell.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale. The family would like to ask those attending to be prepared to share how Richard impacted your life through his testimony and faith. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, 809 W. Gannon Avenue, Zebulon.

The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 12:00 to 12:45 pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Triangle. `
