Obituary

Henry Stevens Proctor, age 87 of Raleigh, NC, passed away on Wednesday June 28, 2022. He was born to the late Daniel Carlton Proctor, Sr. and Elizabeth Alline Stevens Proctor on July 29, 1934 in Parkton, NC (Robeson County). He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 15 years, Barbara McEwen Proctor; his first wife, Nancy Cloer Godley; sister, Claudia Proctor Watson (Harvey); brothers: Daniel Carlton Proctor (Ruth) and William Wesley Proctor (Vicki). He is survived by daughters: Tracy Proctor Mustin (Lloyd) and Susan White Pruitt (Ralph); sons: Henry Stevens Proctor II (Misty) and M. Henry White (Yariv); seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters-in-law: Lenna McEwen McLean of Southern Pines, NC, Rosalind McEwen of Laurel, MD, and Beth McEwen Etheridge of Aiken, SC; and brother-in-law, James McEwen of Hamlet, NC along with too many nieces and nephews across all branches of his amazing family to reasonably count. Henry graduated from Parkton High School in 1952. He began his working life with First Union National Bank in Hamlet, NC but spent most of his career at the North Carolina Highway Patrol Training Center from which he retired after 20 years in 2009. Henry Proctor was a man who could find joy in the simplest of things. He was a friend to everyone he met, be they human or canine. Henry found “family” in every aspect of his life, be it with First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh, where he was an active member for over 30 years, or at Sterling Glenwood Apartments where he had become an unofficial ambassador and helpmate to any neighbor with a problem to be solved. His special relationship to a small group of residents (informally known as “The Lobby Lizards”) helped enable him to live independently and was a comfort to his family who knew there was always someone looking out for him. He was a wonderful father, husband, grandfather, uncle and brother whose kindness, gentleness, and quirky sense of humor inspired us every day. He was a man who not only said what he believed but showed the true nature of his servant’s heart in the way he lived every day. He saw beauty in everything and knew how to savor a moment (and a good home-cooked meal). He was at peace at the end knowing that he was right with God and ready to begin his eternal life in Heaven.

The family would like to thank the medical staff in the Medical Surgery Intensive Care Unit at Rex Hospital in Raleigh where Henry spent his final days under their attentive and loving care.
