Don was born at home in Historic Millbrook, third and last child of Tyson and Pearl Champion Pate.

Don attended Millbrook School, graduating in 1957. He was on the High School Football team, a member of LE CERCLE FRANCAIS, and was voted WITTIEST by his Senior Classmates. Don’s childhood friends were neighbors, upper and lower classmates, and the parents of his friends.

Don attended State and Campbell Colleges, and served in NC National Guard.  He enrolled in Hardbarger Business College, Raleigh, and earned an Automation Institute Diploma as a Wiring Operator of International Business Machines punched card equipment, beginning his career in computer mainframe operation and Assembly writing.

Don worked at the National Records Center and retired from the NC Dept of Corrections as a Computer Analyst in 1993. After retirement, Don met his goals of never receiving a traffic violation, and never working again as an employee.

Don married Linda Carver of Raleigh in 1963, they had a daughter Donna and son David, both of which Don deeply loved. Don married Margaret McDonald in 1982 and became an equally loving stepfather to preschool age Katherine, just as his children were graduating from high school. Margaret’s family provided him with a large new extended family, leading him to comment; “I can’t tell them apart”.

Don enjoyed retirement, RV camping, his five Boston Terriers, and his neighbors. He was the ideal 1950s teenager, respected coworker at DOC and a true family man.

Don is survived by wife Margaret, daughter Donna Pate of Raleigh, son David Pate and wife Brandi of San Diego, California, grandson Austin Pate, granddaughter Brittney Atzmiller and husband Evan, and new great granddaughter Avery Atzmiller, also of California, Katherine and Corwin Milby of Durham, NC and Don’s Boston Terrier puppy, Sheriff Tucker.

He is also survived by sister Patsy and her husband George Stockstill of Raleigh, sister in law Betty Pate of Cary, nieces, and nephews.

Don is survived by his McDonald family Leigh and Denny Headington and family of Clayton, Duane McDonald and Randy Kamm of Ft Leavenworth, KS, and Sally and Marty Adams of Mt. Airy, NC.

Predeceasing him were his parents, brother William Pate of Cary, sister-in-law Diane McDonald Coleman, mother-in-law Marge McDonald (MIL) and Mack McDonald, all from Lillington, NC.
