Obituary

Betty Sue Baker Horton, 89, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at the Horton homeplace, a place she dearly loved. She was born September 20, 1931 to the late Thurman P. Baker and Ollie Hicks Baker. At age 3, her birth mother passed away, and she was lovingly raised by her father and step-mother, the late Clee Horton Baker. Betty Sue graduated from Wendell High School and furthered her education at Wake Forest and Mars Hill where she received a degree in education. She retired from Wake County Public Schools as a secretary, serving at Vaiden Whitley, East Wake, Sanderson and Leesville Road High Schools with Richard Murphy as her school principal.

She was a life-long member at Hephzibah Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, helped cook for Wednesday night suppers. She was a group leader in the Heart to Heart Bible Study Group. Betty Sue was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and made sure her children and grandchildren had the Christian education she so desired for them. A devoted Christian, her family and friends will miss her in their daily lives. 

A service to celebrate her life will be held 2:30 pm, Sunday, February 28, 2021 at Hephzibah Baptist Church, 1794 Wendell Blvd, Wendell with Pastors Aaron Wallace and Bill Sanderson officiating. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery on the Baker plot. 

The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the church and other times at the homeplace. 

She is survived by her son, Lee Horton (Mercedes) of Charlotte; daughters: Terry H. Zimmerman (Tim) of Wendell, Ellen H. Jones of Raleigh, Tracey Horton of Wendell, Ginger H. Lee (Rob) of Wendell, Christy H. Clemmons (Cary) of Wendell; Grandchildren: Justin Zimmerman (Lauren), Joshua Lee Horton (Caitlin), Kristin Horton, Tanner Lee, Drew Clemmons (Ashton), Hunter Lee Rose (Daniel), Davis Clemmons, Baker Lee, Daniel Clemmons; great-grandchildren: Ella Zimmerman, Sophia Zimmerman and two on the way. 

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by brothers: T.P. Baker, Jr., Brodie Baker and Joe Baker; sisters: Louise B. Kirkendall, Metta Lee B. Arnold and Molly B. Vess. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hephzibah Baptist Church Building Fund.
