Obituary

Avon Washington Bryant Jr., 92, passed away Monday, July 2, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. A.W. was born October 31, 1925 in Nash County to the late Avon Washington Bryant, Sr. and Rella Batchelor Bryant. He was a lifelong member of Samaria Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, R.A. Leader and Choir member. A.W. was a member of the Deacons Four Gospel Quartet for many years. He honorably served his country in the Army during World War II.

A.W. was a self-sustaining farmer who enjoyed quail hunting, horseback riding, and gardening to feed his family, friends, and neighbors in need.

After his father’s passing when he was 14, A.W. took over the family farm and assisted his mother in raising his two brothers and three sisters. He was a loving, caring man who was devoted to his family and his God.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 55 years, Mary Jean Batton Bryant, grandson Matthew Carlyle, brothers: Pete and John Bryant, and sister Louise B. Jones.

He is survived by his daughters: Diane Cooke (Keith), Cathy Deaton (Reitzel), and Donna Bryant; grandchildren: Brooks Gay, Courtney Horton (Andy), Kristin Floyd (Adam), Kevin Deaton (Lara), Carmen Brown (Steven); great grandchildren: Ethan Mason, Adam Floyd, Jr., and Ava Horton; sisters: Alene Taylor and Edith Boone, sister-in-law (special) Peggy Bryant; and numerous nieces and nephews, to whom he was affectionately known as “Uncle Bill”.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Samaria Baptist Church, Middlesex, NC. 

Funeral service 11:00 am, Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Samaria Baptist Church, 3752 Samaria Church Lane, Middlesex, NC 27557. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens with military honors, 809 W. Gannon Avenue, Zebulon, NC 27597.

The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 10:45 am at the church in the Family Life Center.
