After 96 great years, Thomas Havens has passed away at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Shelbyville, Indiana and lived his early years in Mishawaka, Indiana. Tom volunteered for military service upon America entering World War II. He served in the Army Air Corps from November 1942 until completion of the European Campaign, October 1945. He was very proud of his service and learned many of the skills he would use throughout his life, being a Sargent in the 410th Bomb Group L, 9th Bombardment Squadron, working on the Douglas A-20 Havoc bomber. During leave in October 1943, he married LaVon (Huffman) Havens.
Tom and LaVon have two daughters, Carol and Janet. In 1980, after retirement from Uniroyal production plant in Mishawaka, they moved to Knightdale, NC.
Tom is survived by his wife, LaVon, of almost 75 years and both of their daughters: Carol Van Den Avyle (husband, James “Jim”, deceased) and Janet Terrill (husband William “Bill”). He also has three grandsons: Thomas (wife, Stephanie) Terrill, Brian Van Den Ayvle and Justin (wife, Meghan), Van Den Ayvle and their great-granddaughter, Elie.
A private family graveside service will be planned for a later date.
