James Douglas “Doug” Lane, 76, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2018. He was born June 23, 1941 in Lenoir County, Kinston, NC to the late Frank Kilpatrick Lane and Estelle Louise Moye Lane. He graduated from high school and attended NC State University for 4 years. Doug honorably served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He retired March 1, 2017, with over 55 years of dedicated service with the NC DOT in the Contract Standards and Development Section as a Preliminary Estimates Squad Leader. He was awarded the “The Order of the Long Leaf Pine,” NCDOT Employee of the Year in 2006, the “Governor Richard Caswell Award” for more than 45 years of State Service, and recognized for NCDOT’s “Centennial Celebration” for his outstanding service to the State of North Carolina. Doug is recognized statewide for his expertise and knowledge of all facets of Roadway Design and Construction of the State’s transportation programs and facilities. He gained friends across the great state of NC and was given the privilege of knowing the best places to eat in these counties – particularly “Meadow Restaurant” and “B’s BBQ in Greenville. Doug was unselfish with his time in helping others, taking time to referee/umpire youth athletics, visit hospitals, nursing homes and provide transportation to the elderly, and donate “Shared Leave” for State employees. He began his longest Road Trip today – to God’s Heavenly Home.
According to Doug’s wishes, he will be cremated and his family will celebrate his life with a public visitation, Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service & Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, 27545.
Surviving: sons: Jim Lane and his wife, Misty, Chad Lane; granddaughter, Kayla Lane, all of Raleigh; the mother of his children and caregiver, Judy Poole Lane; brother, Robert Lane and his wife, Judy B. Lane of Clayton; special niece and nephews: Sammy, Cullen, Sarah, Bob, Richard.
In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brother, William Samuel Lane.
