Elsie (Winstead) Kendrick

Elsie Winstead Kendrick, 95, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018. She was born October 14, 1922 in Wake County to the late Solon W. Winstead and Minnie Jones Winstead. She married Graham Venable O’Neal on October 31, 1942 at her grandparents’ home in Garner. Together they had two daughters, Betty and Barbara. She worked at Hudson Belk in Downtown Raleigh for 28 years before retiring. Elsie had a heart for serving others and volunteered frequently at retirement homes. She loved gospel and country music and listening to Ed O’Neal and the Dixie Melody Boys. She also enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel. Elsie most enjoyed being “Nana” to her great-grandchildren. 

Funeral service 2:00 pm, Sunday, April 8, 2018 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service Chapel, 944 Old Knight Rd., Knightdale, 27545. Entombment at Montlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 1:45 pm at the funeral home and other times at the home of Barbara and Mike Chalk, 801 Fayetteville St., Knightdale, NC 27545.

Surviving: daughters: Betty O’Neal McCall, Barbara O’Neal Chalk (Mike); grandchildren: Brandi M. Brown (Eric), Colby D. McCall, Jay Chalk (Mandy), Kyle Chalk (Brooke); great-grandchildren: Will, Cade, Merritt and soon to be Baby Chalk due in May.

In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by Graham V. O’Neal, the father of her children, and the late Harry Kendrick; sisters: Gretchen Davis, Mary Keel Collins, Julia Ann Bender, Joy O’Neal; and her brother, Edward Winstead.
