Matt Ransom Matthews

Matt Ransom Matthews, 80, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 23, 2020. He was born September 12, 1939 in Portsmouth, Virginia to the late Luther Hubert Matthews, Sr. and Emma Green Matthews. Matt honorably served his country in the US Army. In 1968, he married Sylvia Horton Matthews and together they owned and operated Matthews Food Mart for over 20 years.

Matt will be cremated and buried with his family in Portsmouth, Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; sons: David Kevin Matthews (Linda) of Zebulon, Jerry Michael Burke (Cindy) of Raleigh, Joel Curtis Matthews (Kim) of Hampstead; fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Jo Sullivan of Woodbridge, VA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tonya Jean Matthews Rice; sister, Martha Angeline Lutz; brothers: L. H. Matthews, Jr., Jimmy Matthews, and Leon Matthews.
