Obituary

David Gerald Ernsthausen beloved husband of Kimberly Ann Stallings and son of Gerald W. Ernsthausen and Carol K. Ernsthausen passed away on March 27, 2024 after a four month battle with cholangiocarcinoma. David was born on February 3, 1963 in Rochester, New York. David earned degrees from Monroe Community College, Associate in Science Business Administration; Rochester Institute of Technology, Bachelors in Business Administration; Indiana University – Bloomington, Masters of Library Science; Wake Forest University, Masters of Business Administration. David spent his early life in Spencerport, NY before moving to North Carolina in 1990 after his marriage to Kim to work as a Business Librarian at Wake Forest University. In 1997 David began working at the University of North Carolina at Chapel, Kenan-Flagler Business School as a Business Librarian where he worked until he retired due to his illness. David was a member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Durham.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service & Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale.

A service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00 am, Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Christus Victor Lutheran Church, 1615 NC-54, Durham. This service will be livestreamed and can be viewed at chrustus-victor.org

David is survived by his wife, Kimberly Ann Stallings; beloved Newfoundland daughter, Joy and Newfoundland son, Gabriel; beloved cat sons: Ace and Midnight and cat daughters: Eileen, and Hershey; parents: Gerald W. Ernsthausen and Carol K. Ernsthausen; sisters: Catherine Ernsthausen, Mary Frey (Mitch Frey); brother, Mark Ernsthausen (Michelle); nieces: Arianna Ernsthausen, Sarah Frey; nephews: Andrew Ernsthausen, Aaron Ernsthausen, Nicholas Frey; brother-in-law, Michael Stallings (Mitzi Hole); mother-in-law, Sally Stallings; sister-in-law, Patricia Wagner (Donald); great niece, Penelope Jablonski; Lab niece, Lucy.

David was preceded in death by his beloved furry children who met him at the Rainbow Bridge Keeshond, Annie; Newfoundlands: Valkyrie, Thor, RJ, and Megan; cats: Simon, Cinnamon Roll, Woodchuck, Ebby Emerald, Boston Blackie, Little Shadow, Benson, and Barbados; Foster Cats: Atlas, Mr. Whiskers, Superforce, Phantom, Victory Holly, Eagle, and Milo; Feral cats: Oreo, Mr. Black, Mr. Dark, Gray, Smokey, and SJ. He was also preceded by his grandparents, several aunts and uncles, mother and father-in-law.

David had a passion for animal rescue. For more than 15 years, David and Kim fostered approximately 200 cats including adults and momma cats and their litters of kittens. David and Kim also took care of several Feral Cat Colonies.
