Shirley “Shirl” Albert Smith, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 12, 2017. He was born October 10, 1926, in Burke County, NC to the late James E. Smith and Sarah Jane Mull Smith. Shirl, a navy veteran of World War II, retired from the Automotive Mechanics Department of Western Piedmont Community College, Morganton, NC. 

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 22, 2017, in the Poteat Chapel of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church, 1801 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27605. 

A memorial service will take place 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Mount Home Baptist Church, 2272 Mt Home Church Rd, Morganton, NC 28655 with Military Honors. Inurnment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 12:00 to 1:00 pm at the church.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Upton Smith; children: Coman Smith (Pamela) of Concord, Lemmie Smith (Jenny) of Claremont, Cindy Schultz (Larry) of Knightdale; sister Pearl Smith Huffman of Morganton; grandchildren: Kimberly Gallagher (Jim), Tracey Lail (Anthony), Josh Smith, Matthew Smith, Ryan Schultz, Kelly Schultz; great-grandchildren: Emily Gallagher, Ethan Gallagher, Seth Lail, Drew Lail, Kinsley Lail, Grayson Smith, Isaac Smith. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Ruth Smith Hull, Lloyd Smith, Bernice Smith, Earl Smith, Ruby Smith Ollis. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
