Martha entered into the gates of heaven the 9th of January 2017. She was with her granddaughter at WakeMed hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. 

She was born the 11th of August 1928 in Dundee, Mississippi to her parents Duke and Irene Lammey. She spent her childhood in the Mississippi delta, Vardaman, MS and Memphis, TN. She started her family in Clarksdale, MS. Then she lived most of her adult life in Minter City and Greenwood, Mississippi. Martha was a member of Minter City Methodist Church. She resided in Jackson, MS for several years before recently moving with her daughter to Knightdale, NC. 

Martha retired from the USPS as rural letter carrier in Greenwood, Mississippi with 20 years of service. In her life, she enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, and crochet. She also enjoyed genealogy and telling the stories of her family’s history, but loved spending time with her family most of all. 

Married for 64 years, she was preceded in death by her husband Jesse Elmer Oswalt, Jr. She is survived by a son, Elmer Oswalt, III (Debbie Tanner) of Daphne, AL; a daughter, Marie O. Nutt, Knightdale, NC; a brother, Brooks Lammey (Sharon) and a sister, Tommye Lammey Carver (Bud). Other survivors are grandchildren, Kim Mirabella of Daphne, AL; Chris Oswalt (Sonja) of Knoxville TN; Michael Nutt (Ellie Morris) of Raleigh, NC; Elizabeth Nutt of Knightdale, NC; and great grandchildren Tanner Oswalt, Sammy Mirabella, Michael Oswalt, and Otis Nutt. 

The memorial service and burial will be at Coahoma County Memorial Gardens in Clarksdale at a much later date. 

The family requests no flowers; for those wishing to do so, memorials may be made to the Methodist Children’s Homes of Mississippi, P.O. Box 66, Clinton, MS 39060, or to your favorite charity.
