Joanne Matthews

Joanne Matthews of Zebulon, formerly of Raleigh, passed away, Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Wake Medical Center with her family by her side. Joanne is a former hairdresser, having owned and operated her own shop in Laurinburg, NC, before returning to Raleigh where she worked until her health deteriorated to the point she had to retire. Even with all the many obstacles she faced in her life, Joanne always tried to be a friend and a mentor to others facing issues. She was a woman of true grit and determination and showed so many people how to live in a positive way.

Joanne is the third born daughter of the six girls born to Allen (Bro) and Mary Matthews who predeceased her. In addition, she is predeceased by her sisters Nancy Brink and Jean Lively; and her nephew David Sutton.

Left behind to cherish her memory is her daughter, Heather Gibson, and her little granddaughter, Gracie, whom she adored. In addition, Joanne is survived by sisters: Linda Privette of Zebulon, Mary Finnerty of Charlotte, and Betty Barbour of Chatham, Virginia and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins scattered across the country. She is also survived by her good friend, Glenn James of Raleigh and her former step-daughter, Jackie McGee of Myrtle Beach, SC.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Monday, April 9, 2018 at L. Harold Poole Funeral Service & Crematory, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, NC 27545. Internment of her ashes will be private.
