Dr. Sampat Raj Jain, age 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at his home in Durham, NC surrounded by his family and friends. He was born on September 18, 1936 in Balotra, India to Hastimal and Aichuki Lunia. He married Shanti Jain on June 30, 1963 in Jodhpur, India. He moved to the United States in 1967 to pursue studies in Business Management. In 1983, he earned a PhD from the University of Georgia, Athens. In 1977, he and his family moved to Durham, NC, where he became a tenured professor at North Carolina Central University. He then joined Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and worked in insurance and financial services. Sampat and his family became part of a large but close-knit Indian community in NC. Active in the community, at temple, and with various Jain societies, he constantly looked for ways to be of service to others. Later in life, Sampat most loved being a grandfather and was happiest when playing and laughing with his grandchildren. Ever the teacher, he loved telling stories and sharing wisdom from his life. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shanti Jain; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mahendra and Charlene, Ati and Beth, and Raja and Nevran; and grandchildren, Ajay, Sona, Vijay, and Maya. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 4:00pm at L. Harold Poole Service & Crematory at 944 Old Knight Rd, Knightdale, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations to be sent to Veerayatan International.
