Donald E. Ferguson, 77, of Raleigh, NC, died January 6, 2018. He was the eldest son of Ellis H. and Marguerite L.H. Ferguson. Don was born in Rapid City, SD, and moved as a child to the Chicago area, where he attended school in Blue Island before graduating from Southern Illinois and Purdue universities. He then taught in Chicago and Flossmoor, IL, where he met his future wife, Marcia. In 1970, they moved to Durham, NC, where Don worked on his PhD at Duke University while serving as a graduate assistant. Upon graduation, Don worked for the state of North Carolina in a series of positions until retirement.

Don and Marcia enjoyed travel, most often by RV, and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Starting in 2004, they split their time between Raleigh and the Palm Springs, CA, area. Don enjoyed sports and was an avid Duke basketball fan.  

Don and Marcia were married for 44 years until Marcia's death in 2013. Don is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marisa Ferguson and Michael Kelly; grandchildren Maura, Tess, and Gabriel Kelly; his sister, Ann Healy of Las Vegas, NV; and three brothers, Tom Ferguson of Waynesburg, KY, Thad (Friedel) Ferguson of La Quinta, CA, and Art (Linda) Ferguson of Oak Forest, IL.

A memorial service will be held in Raleigh, NC, in the summer. Memorial contributions may be made to an organization of one's choice.
