Daniel Jacob Mitchell, Jr.

March 2, 1930 ~ January 5, 2018 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Daniel Jacob Mitchell, Jr. (aliases: Mitch, D. J., Daddy, Mitcharoonie, and PaPa) passed away Friday, January 5, 2018.  He was born in Duncan, NC in 1930 to the late Daniel Jacob Mitchell, Sr. and Daisy Betts Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his wives: Mae F. Mitchell, Rudene Medlin Mitchell and Margaret Mitchell; daughters, Susan Michelle Mitchell and Katrina Mitchell; and his siblings: Paul Mitchell, O’Connor Mitchell, Agnes Crabtree, Orbell Griffin, and Patsy Howell.

He is survived by his children: Bobby Mitchell (Robin) of South Boston, VA, Judy M. Bridgers (Nathaniel) of Raleigh, Jeanne Pearce (Bruce) of Virginia Beach, VA, Deanna Wall of Knightdale; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and his siblings: Wilbur Mitchell, Vila Gray Dupree, Uldine Parkhurst and Robert Mitchell.

Mitch lived in Knightdale for 45 years and was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and the Senior Men’s Sunday School Class. He joined the Navy at age 17 and was designated Honor Man of Company 42. He worked for R.W. Moore Equipment Co. for over 15 years and Hare Pipeline for 45 years. Prior to that he worked various trades including fishing, shrimping, setting up mobile homes, and USG Sheet Rock Company. He knew something about everything.

He loved to fish and talk. He did lots of things with his church and the Senior Men’s Class – one day we remember him “helping the elderly” clean their yards. He would never turn anyone down for help. He was always there, willing to pitch in. He enjoyed helping others and was a great caregiver to his wife, Mae. He was by her side through her illness.

Daddy loved collecting things from motor homes, boats, motorcycles, tools of any kind; you could say he was a packrat. We love him so much and can’t imagine life without our Daddy. He had a special place in his heart for all animals. He loved taking care of lonely, stray cats, squirrels, rabbits, racoons, birds and especially Randy, his faithful sidekick. He loved life. He had a gentle loving spirit and never gave up. He had a zest for life and wanted to give back to many.
