Welcome to the memorial page for

Curtis Eugene "Gene" Hinton

November 10, 1934 ~ December 2, 2016 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Eugene grew up on the family farm with his parents, James Doyt Hinton and Katie Creech Hinton, and his brother James Doyt Hinton, Jr. He had many adventures with his brother, extended family and friends, and enjoyed recalling the good times and memories. As a teenager, he took the name of his admired grandfather, Curtis. He began a 38-year career with the State of North Carolina as a driver’s license examiner in Charlotte, and retired from the Community Colleges System. During his career, he was active in the State Employees Association of NC, serving on various committees and organizing meetings. He enjoyed his work and the people he worked with and the opportunities to travel around the state and the country. Eugene was a life-long member of Corinth Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and in many other capacities. He was also a 50-year member of Archer Lodge #165 A.F. & A.M.  After he moved to Franklin, NC in 1999, Eugene served on the advisory board of the State Employees Credit Union. He continued to make new friends and always looked forward to visits “back home” to see friends and family.

Eugene is survived by his wife who took excellent care of him for many years, Judy Moffitt-Hinton of Franklin; his children, Cathy & Bryant Bock of Corinth-Holders; Janet & Jeff Creech of Emit; and Richard Hinton and special friend, Christian Creech, of Corinth-Holders; and their mother, Lunell Hinton. He is also survived by grandchildren, Andy & Ava Bock, Stephen Bock, Zachary McLeod, Ryan Creech, Daniel McLeod, Justin Davis, and Jeffrey Creech; five great-grandchildren;  a host of cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many  friends. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, James and Sue Hinton of Corinth-Holders, and their family.  They provided with a comfortable place to stay during his visits, and he always looked forward to time spent with them.

Eugene is also survived by his Franklin family, Sue Moffitt Calhoun, Novia Talley, Paula Rodgers, Zoie Rodgers, Greg Welch, Tim and Donna Moffitt and family. They took good care of him and provided much companionship during his time there.

Eugene was a creative writer, artist, and poet. His family never knew when a new copy of the “Franklin/Corinth” news might appear in their mailbox, and he even wrote a book about a monkey. He embraced technology to keep up with his family and friends and the world at large. He had a legendary sense of humor as many of his friends and family can attest. As long as he could, he continued to read and learn.  He encouraged his family to “go every chance you get” because as much as he had done, he always enjoyed going to new places. He was always more interested in the well-being of others and never complained through many health issues and much pain. His family would especially like to thank the medical professionals in Franklin and Asheville who took care of Eugene.  Everyone who helped him became a friend.
